Notice of temporary closure of Oakland Career Center at 1212 Broadway

Oakland Career Center to Expand Services for Job Seekers

Services Moved Temporarily While Facility Is Renovated

Oakland’s one-stop Downtown Career Center, operated by the Private Industry Council (PIC), will close temporarily beginning Wednesday, December 16, while its facility at 1212 Broadway is renovated and expanded to merge with the state Employment Development Department (EDD). The new center will offer updated, comprehensive services for those who are seeking jobs and employment skills training.

While the downtown Oakland center is under renovation, services and resources will be relocated to Oakland Career Center East, at 675 Hegenberger Road, 3rd Floor, Oakland, and be available starting Monday, January 4, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

“In these challenging times, we at the Career Center have been looking for ways to provide more efficient and comprehensive services for local job seekers.  Our merger with the state Employment Development Department  (EDD) is the answer. We are creating a super one-stop shop, ” said Melbra Watts, Director of Administrative Services at PIC.

After the merger, job seekers who visit the center will be able to file an unemployment claim, attend free computer classes, browse jobs on the EDD computers and meet with an EDD counselor, in addition to all the services already offered at the Career Center.

The expanded downtown Career Center is scheduled to open at the beginning of April.

The Private Industry Council’s administrative offices will not be impacted, remaining at its present location, 1212 Broadway 3rd Floor, in Oakland.
